Scott Noel ~ Local Habitations and A Name ~ Solo Show

Since my arrival at The Academy four years ago, I have met many great artists and professors alike, who have pushed me closer to achieving my artistic goals. Yet one professor has, and always will, remain one of the most inspiring, dedicated, and passionate instructors I have even been fortunate enough to study with. I introduce to you, local Philadelphia artist, William Scott Noel.

Noel’s latest solo show, Local Habitations and A Name, is currently hanging at the Gross McCleaf Gallery and will remain up from March 1 to the 28.

Fellow Academy students, professors, and general public walking around the show.

On to the Paintings

Here are just a few of the Paintings currently hanging up at the Gross McCleaf Gallery.
If you are interested in seeing more of Scott Noel's work, I would suggest taking a trip over to the show, but for those who cannot find the time to do so, I recommend stopping by my Google Albums for more high quality images.

Alla Prima Portrait of Michael Cole Manley

"Mike Manley" ~ Oil on Canvas ~ 11 x 8

This is an Alla Prima portrait painting I did at the last Dirty Palette Club gathering. We initially had a still life set up, but I thought it would be a bit more challenging and fun to paint a moving figure.

Landscape Painting ~ En Plein Air

In hopes to better understand nature, atmosphere and the effects of light, I have decided to get myself out of the studio and do several Plein Air studies. I will be attempting 2 - 3 paintings a week over the course of two months. Here is the first in my series.

--------------------------------------------------------------
I leave off with some other landscapes done by fantastic artists who inspire me to step up my own game and increase my knowledge of Art.

Studio Incamminati Demonstration (Burlington, NJ)

Studio Incamminati and the Burlington Lyceum Hall have come together to introduce a new series of painting classes. As a promotional event, Robin Frey, Stephen Early and Peter Kelsey have come together under one roof to do a live painting demonstration.

Since the event seemed like a great chance to pick up a few tips and meet some new faces, my friends and I decided to drive in and check it out. The demonstrations were set up quite well, and those running the show held no expense when it came to treating guests with hospitality.

People of Septa - Various Head Sketches

Everyday I commute home from Philadelphia using Septa's Regional Rail System. It's only a short 30 minute ride, but this allows for some quality sketching time, something I have been neglecting for quite some time now. Its always nice to loosen up the hand and brain, allowing gesture to take over. So here are several of my short sketches taken from my fellow commuters.

Mediums: Red ink and graphite on toned paper

Illuxcon 2011

It's hard to believe yet another year has flown right by as science fiction/fantasy convention, Illuxcon, opened it's doors to artists, collectors and admirers alike. This year marked the conventions fourth year running, and by the amount of people in attendance, I think it is safe to expect Illuxcon's fifth year to be just as popular. Sadly, several artists could not make it out due to the freak snow storm we had in October, but the convention was still a huge hit!

Donato Giancola is an inspiring artist, who continues to blow my mind every time I see his work or meet him personally. For years his art has forced me to push harder and faster in my own paintings, which is why I was very disappointed to miss out on his lecture, "The Mud of Venus." Alas, maybe next year I will be in attendance to hear it. If you are unfamiliar with Giancola's work, stop by his website and look around! You will not regret it.

It's always nice to see a rare gem like this at Illuxcon

Eric Fortune is yet another painter who's dialog is nothing less then inspiring and helpful.
Every year his work gets stronger and more impressive to look at! Thanks for all the great career advice and good luck with your paintings.

Painting by Tyler Jacobson

This was my second year meeting Erik Gist in person. He is a friendly, talented artist with a lot of helpful career advice. He has lived on the West Coast his whole life and teaches at Watt's Atelier. I have been following his blog for several years now and for anybody who is interested in traditional realist training, or illustration, check it out! Gist posts many of his classroom demonstrations as well as several how to guides that are well worth a look over.

I must say, this lecture alone made the trip worth it.

A beautiful sunset over the convention building. What a way to go out.
Special Thanks to all the artists and people who make sure Illuxcon runs smoothly. Your show inspires me to work harder, and each year I leave with more knowledge and motivation then my body can handle.
